Keloid is a scar that forms when the healing process after an injury goes uncontrolled resulting in heaping up of scar tissue. It usually presents as a rubbery raised nodule few days after the injury and sometimes presents with itching and pain at the site of scar. Any minor injury like ear piercing or minor inflammation like acne on chest can result in a keloid. Once it starts forming, this lesion usually grows in size for couple of weeks and then stops growing further. Rarely do they get infected resulting in severe pain, pus formation and bleeding. Though these are common in darker skin types however any skin type can get affected. Most common sites affected are chest area, shoulders, ear lobes and back.
Once formed the treatment options for keloids are limited. Surgical excision benefits rarely as the procedure itself can result in a keloid. Intra- lesion steroid injections along with silicone gel sheets is a safe treatment option for keloids. Lasers have also been tried with successful outcome.
